Case-by-Collaboration: An Adaptable Soft Skills-Based Educational Model for Health Disciplines

Purpose: The purpose of this study was two-fold and consisted the development a skills-based model for Case-by-Collaboration (CBC) collection qualitative data from students teachers aimed at answering research question: What skills do individuals (students) apply during completion hypothetical medical laboratory management-based capstone project? Method: A consensual design selected study. Students their instructors three Medical Laboratory Science programs located in Texas, New York, Missouri were recruited. given case that centers on fictitious Cheapskate Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). project culminated when each team presented proposal to become sole provider testing services HMO Board Directors (BOD). initially designed be accessed completed online, where different institutions would come together remotely complete requirements. Data collected through in-person observations final presentation, semi-structured interviews with instructors, analysis documents. coded, transcripts reviewed numerous times. Two strategies employed ensure integrity First, coded examined across strategies, containing data, themes identified by researcher an outside auditor. Secondly, audit trail established document how analyzed, along documentation thought processes used interpretation phase project. Results: current analyzed responses 36 5 sites. Seven themes, form skill sets, analyzed:1) information technology, 2) collaboration/team building, 3) verbal written communication, 4) clinical reasoning, 5) creativity, 6) managerial, 7) research/investigative. Conclusion: These results suggest CBC can develop desirable soft skills. This transferrable CBCs independent studied content. Thus, is innovative teach health disciplines.
